Carrie gripped her flashlight tighter as she descended into the abandoned lab’s basement. The air grew colder with each step, the faint hum of machinery the only sound in the suffocating silence. Something about the place felt wrong—not just empty, but alive with a presence she couldn’t see.

"Tom, you there?" she whispered into her mic.

Static.

She paused, her heart racing. The signal had been fine just moments ago. Now, all she could hear was the faint echo of her own breathing. She glanced over her shoulder, but the stairwell was empty—at least, it looked that way.

"Carrie," Tom’s voice finally crackled back, distorted and faint. "Get out of there. Now."

The words sent a chill down her spine. "What are you talking about? I just got here."

"You’re not alone," Tom said, urgency cutting through the static.

The flashlight beam caught something ahead—a glint of metal, a half-open door swinging slowly on its hinges. She stepped closer, her hand instinctively brushing her holster.

Then she saw it.

A small, red pill lying on the floor, crushed into dust.
