In a city of shadows, the deadliest predator hides behind the screen.
NYPD detectives Carrie Blake and Tom Elway have built their careers catching the most dangerous killers, but their newest case might break them. Someone is taking out Manhattan’s elite in high-security homes with precision so advanced, it seems inhuman. The only leads? A defiant hacker with a grudge and a billionaire tech mogul whose security empire might be protecting more than it should.
As Carrie and Tom race to uncover the truth, the killer targets Carrie, turning the investigation into a deadly game of survival. To stop a murderer who’s always one step ahead, they’ll have to navigate lies, betrayal, and the limits of technology—while risking everything, including each other.
Justice isn’t guaranteed when the enemy controls the game.
Excerpt:
Carrie Blake was tired of staring at screens. But the deeper she dug into the Net Guardian system—the sleeker-than-sin surveillance service supposedly designed to protect the ultra-wealthy—the more she was convinced it was hiding something.
Or someone was using it to do exactly the opposite.
It had been a week since Gordon Light, billionaire hedge fund king and part-time internet menace, was killed in the most impossible way: shot cleanly through the bulletproof glass of his penthouse apartment. No visible shooter. No gunshot residue. No trace of a weapon.
Just one perfect hole.
And one very dead billionaire.
Carrie leaned over her desk, surrounded by printouts, failed contact attempts with Cybermart, and her own scrawled notes. None of it made sense. No motive. No weapon. No suspect. Only a blinking red light captured on a mirror in the victim’s apartment—one she couldn’t explain.
Across the office, her partner Tom Elway was flicking through Gordon Light’s Twitter DMs, muttering things like, “People really get this angry over tree types?”
Carrie ignored him.
Her fingers hovered over her phone. She was about to dial the District Attorney’s office for the third time that day when she heard it.
Three soft tones.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Coming from her computer.
Her screen flickered.
And then, for a split second, the live camera feed of Gordon Light’s living room—the exact moment of the murder—flashed across her monitor. A red dot hovered center frame.
The bullet's origin.
And something else.
A shadow.
Just before the feed blinked out, a distorted voice echoed through her speakers:
“You’re watching the wrong side of the glass.”
Carrie’s blood turned to ice. She slammed her hand on the keyboard, trying to bring the footage back, but it was gone. Wiped. No trace in the browser history. Not even a cached file.
Tom looked up. “What just happened?”
Carrie didn’t answer. She was already grabbing her coat.
Because that wasn’t just a glitch.
That was a message.
Someone knew she was watching.
