Callie Borden has the perfect life. A successful literary agent, she’s engaged to be married to a man who isn’t intimidated by her success. The only problem is, she’s miserable.
Her fiancé is dull as cardboard and emotionally detached. He also has a wandering eye. Her job forces her to walk a careful line with her most successful publisher, an ultraconservative man who dislikes negotiating with women. Her intimate life is unfulfilling. She is too busy for much of a social life.
She longs for adventure...and is plagued by memories of the man that got away.
So when her high school boyfriend, Bryan Blake, shows back up in her life as a breakout writer looking for new representation, a desperate Callie couldn’t be happier.
Their working relationship quickly blooms into a torrid affair that leaves Callie guilt-ridden and full of doubts. And when strange coincidences and incidents occur to send her life into turmoil, she realizes it’s all too convenient—and bizarre.
Something isn’t right, but to uncover the truth, Callie will have to delve into the dark past, where secrets have been buried for a reason and bringing them into the light of day could cost her everything.

Special excerpt:
Callie’s eyes fluttered open, heavy with exhaustion, her head pounding as if she’d been slammed against a wall. The room was dim, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of a single overhead bulb. She tried to move but quickly realized her wrists and ankles were restrained—bound tightly to the arms and legs of a sturdy wooden chair.
Her pulse quickened. Panic surged through her as she tugged at the restraints. The rope dug into her skin, stinging with each frantic pull. Breathing heavily, she scanned the room, her mind racing to piece together how she had ended up here. The faint scent of damp wood and mildew clung to the air, and the walls were lined with shelves of dusty books and faded trinkets. It looked like an old library, neglected and forgotten.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of footsteps. Steady. Measured. Her heart leapt into her throat. The door creaked open, and a figure stepped inside.
Bryan.
His presence filled the room, a strange mixture of the familiar and the ominous. He was dressed impeccably, his blazer pristine, but his eyes betrayed a wildness that chilled Callie to the bone. This wasn’t the Bryan she remembered—the charming, sensitive man from her past. This was someone else entirely.
“Well, look who’s finally awake,” he said, his voice calm, almost mocking, as he leaned against the doorframe. “You’ve been out for hours. I was beginning to worry you’d miss all the fun.”
“What… what is this?” Callie stammered, her voice shaking. “Why am I tied up? Bryan, this isn’t funny.”
“Oh, Callie,” he said with a faint chuckle. “This isn’t about jokes. This is about closure. Don’t you think we deserve that after all these years?”
Her stomach twisted. “Closure? What are you talking about?”
Bryan stepped closer, his gaze never leaving hers. “You don’t get it, do you? After everything we’ve been through, everything I’ve done for you… you walked away. You left me to pick up the pieces. And now, here you are, living your perfect little life, as if none of it mattered.”
Callie’s mind raced. This was about their past—the breakup, the years apart, and everything she thought they’d both moved beyond. She had to tread carefully. “Bryan, listen to me,” she said, forcing her voice to stay steady. “That was a long time ago. We were kids. Whatever you’re feeling, we can talk about it. You don’t have to do this.”
He tilted his head, a strange smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Talk about it? Oh, we’ll talk. But first, you need to understand how it feels to be powerless. To have no control. The way I felt when you left.”
He took a step closer, and Callie instinctively shrank back. Her mind scrambled for a way out, a way to reason with him, but nothing seemed to break through the haze of his fixation
“Bryan, please,” she tried again. “This isn’t you. You’re a good person. You don’t want to hurt me.”
He laughed, the sound sharp and unnerving. “Hurt you? Oh, Callie, this isn’t about hurting you. This is about making things right.”
She felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes, her fear bubbling over. “What do you want from me?”
Bryan crouched in front of her, his face inches from hers. His eyes burned with an intensity that made her skin crawl. “I want you to see the truth,” he said softly. “The truth about us. About what we could have been. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll finally understand.”
Callie’s breaths came in short gasps. She had to stay calm, had to find a way to survive this. But as Bryan stood and walked to a nearby table, picking up a gleaming knife, the glint of steel sent a fresh wave of terror coursing through her veins.
“Now,” he said, turning back to her with the knife in hand, “let’s get started.”
